For my holiday ornament, I created an origami “bird in a cage.” I started out with thin stripes of blue and white paper, and stapled the tops of the paper somewhat diagonally. Then, I stapled the bottoms which made a slit between the two strips of paper. I continued to do this, bending the strips in the middle to make a sphere, and continued to do this all the way around until it made a ball. I kept an opening on one side for the entrance of the “cage.” Then, I had Kayla help me create an origami crane and I taped it to the bottom of the inside of the cage. For my part in the posters for veterans, I wrote on most of the cards that went on the poster, and I helped Rachel design the eagle on the poster our group made. I was very happy to write many inspirational quotes and phrases to the soldiers to give them a smile for the holidays. However, I did screw up on a few of the cards and wrote the wrong way on the landscape cards. For my job shadowing experience, I shadowed Justin Michal who is the Tech and Media Director at the Carolina Forest Community Church. I got to watch Justin create and edit announcements for the church in Adobe Photoshop, and he showed me a few tips and tricks so that I could get better at it. I also got to watch him do an interview with Nyla Goode for a promotional video for the church’s Costa Rica missionary trip. I helped him with fonts for a few announcement poster and helped design the layout for the VolunTour session going on at the church. I enjoyed the experience very much as I got to see what it’d be like to work as a graphic designer in a real life location. The job itself seemed very laid back but also serious, as he had to get things done on time and efficiently. It was also super fun to help someone else design something that would later go up for everyone to see.
